As a director and award-winning documentary filmmaker, Payne Lindsey has always had a passion for the true crime genre. Inspired by docu-series like Netflix's Making a Murderer and HBO's The Jinx, Lindsey set out to find an unsolved mystery that he could investigate and develop into a documentary project of his own.
A Metro-Atlanta native, he decided to choose a case close to home, a decade-old cold case from South Georgia, the disappearance of Tara Grinstead. Lindsey drew inspiration from another one of his favorites, the hit podcast Serial, and elected to tell the story of his real-time investigation, week by week in audio form, under the name Up and Vanished.
The events of the next 12 months turned Tara Grinstead's case into one of the hottest crime stories of the year. With over 150 million downloads, Up and Vanished propelled Grinstead's case into the mainstream media.
Lindsey’s upcoming podcast, Atlanta Monster, is a joint project with podcast powerhouse HowStuffWorks. It’s set to debut at the top of 2018 and explores one of his home city’s darkest secrets, The Atlanta Child Murders. Freshly shaken martinis also help. Spending hours on research per case, John and Daryn not only tell the narrative of each murder but also delve into compelling and little- known facts about the lives of each killer and victim. What was the motivation? Was the killer a psychopath or a sane person who simply snapped? What was the impact on the victim’s family, friends and community?

In 2016, when Payne Lindsey took on the 11-year-old cold case disappearance of Tara Grinstead, the largest case file in Georgia history, he did not anticipate creating an investigative phenomenon spanning over 70 episodes and more than 150 million downloads. Over the past 15 months, Up and Vanished Season 1 has gone beyond on-demand audio with a 17 city tour across the United States, and a TV deal with the Oxygen network. Lindsey now has his sights set on a new case for Up and Vanished Season 2.
