MATT MURPHY


Matt Murphy is Senior Deputy District Attorney for Orange County, California’s Homicide Unit. Over the last 17 years he has tried some of the most interesting, complex and difficult cases and gone up against some of the finest and most experienced defense lawyers in the country. Murphy hasn’t lost a case in more than two decades and has never lost a homicide case.  

As an Orange County homicide prosecutor, Murphy attends crime scenes, observes autopsies and makes his own filing decisions. He is one of two designated “cold case” deputies and has tried many murder cases which are decades-old. 

For the last 13 years he’s served on the Homicide Special Circumstances Committee, reviewing each special circumstance murder filing and making formal recommendations to the elected DA on whether or not to seek the death penalty. He currently has 24 pending murder cases including the Golden State Killer case.  

Murphy is a graduate of the University of San Diego Law School and is a Los Angeles native.
